Carbon Dioxide Emissions

Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Energy Production and Use

According to Statistics Finland’s preliminary data, carbon dioxide emissions of fossil fuels and peat combustion declined in Finland by 12.5 per cent from the previous year, amounting to 54 million tonnes in 2008. Last year, total consumption of energy was 23 per cent greater and emissions 2 per cent higher than in 1990.

The fall in emissions in 2008 resulted from the decreased consumption of fossil fuels and peat. Use of hard coal decreased both in separate production of electricity and in combined heat and power production. The use of peat in energy production decreased significantly as well after the record year 2007. Use of oil products declined by 2 per cent. The use of renewable energy grew by nearly 5 per cent from the previous year.
