Energy Audits

Energy audits involve comprehensive assessments of energy use within specific facilities and premises or entire organisations, with the aim being to identify ways to save energy. Energy audits conducted in accordance with official guidelines may be subsidised by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. Energy audits may be conducted for industrial and energy facilities, entire transportation and logistics chains, and service organisations in the public or private sector. The Ministry of the Environment runs a parallel scheme covering energy audits conducted for residential apartment blocks.

Finland recognised as a pioneer in energy auditing

Finland was one of the first countries to launch such energy auditing schemes, and many other countries have benefitted from Finland’s experiences when building up their own schemes. Finland organised the pioneering international conference AUDIT '06, and has additionally coordinated two extensive energy audit projects within the EU Commission’s SAVE II programme.

Motiva is responsible for the practical running of the energy auditing schemes overseen by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy. Such audits are widely known as “Motiva energy audits”. Motiva’s work involves promoting energy audits, monitoring their results, training energy auditors, and conducting related quality controls. Applications for energy audit subsidies are processed on a regional basis by Finland’s 15 regional centres for economic development, transport and the environment (ELY Centres).
