How to save electricity in the kitchen?

Most electricity used in the kitchen is for cooking and storage, and for dishwashing. Using the following tips you can significantly reduce electricity consumption.

Cooker and oven

  • Cook sensibly:
    • Use a cooking pan that is the right size, has a thick base and is covered with a lid
    • Turn down the heat after boiling
    • A microwave oven is the most efficient way to cook and heat small portions of food.
  • Cook economically:
    • Use the remaining heat of the hotplates and oven. Place food in the oven in a covered pan or roasting bag.

Refrigeration appliances

  • Place refrigeration appliances away from heat sources. Take into account the location of the oven, radiator and window.
  • Make sure that there is sufficient air circulation around appliances. They will otherwise heat up and their electricity consumption may increase three-fold.
  • Set the temperature correctly. Cold produce will not keep if it is too warm, and if the temperature is too low, it will freeze. Wrong temperature settings also affect energy consumption.
  • Care for refrigeration appliances. Defrost the freezer regularly, check the state of the seals on the doors, and clean the condensers.

Dishwashers

  • Use a warm water connection in the dishwasher – cold water connections use more energy.
  • Wash full loads – you will use less water and energy per wash.
  • Select washing programmes according to how dirty the dishes are.

Did you know?

  • An oven that has been heated to 200°C still has 30 minutes heat of about 120°C.
  • The electricity consumption of a refrigeration appliance increases by 10-20%, if it is placed too near an oven, radiator or window.
