Five Energy-saving Tips for Schools
Everyone can help to reduce their school’s energy consumption. By spreading information about useful actions and encouraging others to join in, pupils’ initiatives can lead to significant improvements.
- Turn off all lighting and equipment whenever you are the last person to leave a room.
- Turn off taps carefully, and inform the school caretaker about any leaks you notice in plumbing systems.
- Regulate radiators to ensure that room temperatures are sufficient (about 21°C).
- When letting fresh air into a room, ensure a brief through-flow of air, rather than leaving windows open for longer periods.
- Use energy-saving settings on electrical appliances.
Even seemingly small actions can lead to significant savings in the long run!
Provide prompt feedback on any problems
School caretakers are typically responsible for the maintenance of the school buildings’ heating, lighting, plumbing and ventilation systems, but in practice pupils and teachers are almost always the first to notice any problems with these systems. It can greatly help if maintenance staff are informed promptly about any problems that result in increased energy use.
