Active Learning – Learning by Doing

AL log nettiActive Learning teaching materials are designed to combine energy-saving actions with other teaching objectives – and to get pupils to learn by doing. Through these exercises the pupils will help to increase the efficiency of the school’s energy use. This can also result in significant cost savings. Activities are designed for 9-15-year-olds.

This international project has brought together some of the best teaching ideas from around Europe for school activities related to energy saving, renewable energy resources and the environmental impacts of transport.

The scheme’s methods and materials have been tested in almost 200 schools in more than ten countries around Europe. They have been further improved on the basis of feedback from teachers to ensure their practical usability.

The Active Learning website has an Active Learning toolkit containing activities for teachers to organise for their pupils on energy saving and energy efficiency.

Activities are divided into six themes:
  • energy monitoring
  • heating
  • lighting
  • electrical appliances
  • water use
  • transport
The teachers’ toolkit is available through the "Active Learning exercises" link on the right.
