Energy Auditing – the Step from the Start

Energy auditing is a good method to improve energy use and, through it, make important cost savings. By improving energy effiency the burden on the environment decreases.

Auditing produces clear targets

A result of energy auditing is that companies acquire clear efficiency targets that they can use in their management system of energy and environmental matters. In this way auditing helps companies meet the energy efficiency requirements set out by the environmental authorities.

Energy audits give also information on how much the implementation of the saving proposals will reduce the CO2 emissions of the facility being audited.

Importance of planning and realization

In order to get the most out of an energy audit, the implementation of the audit must be planned carefully. It is important to know the special features of the facility’s use of energy, and the availability of a company’s own expertise and sufficient resources. In addition, it is necessary to decide whether to make subcontracts with process or other energy specialists, especially in audits in process industry or energy sector.

After the energy audit:
  • implement the saving measures;
  • focus on the future maintenance and improvement of energy efficiency, including through new and follow-up audits; and
  • estimate and monitor changes in energy efficiency (i.e. changes in energy consumption taking into account changes in operations/output).
