Circular economy green deal – Support, tools and cooperation for circular economy transformation

The Circular Economy Green Deal is a voluntary commitment that provides organisations with a clear framework for promoting the circular economy. It is aimed at anyone who wants to play a role in building a resource-wise and carbon-neutral society – for example companies, industries, municipalities and regions looking for concrete ways to reduce resource consumption and develop responsible business models.

It aims to accelerate the adoption of circular economy principles in different sectors. By getting involved, an organisation will receive expert support, concrete tools and the opportunity to network with other pioneers. This will help to improve competitiveness, develop new business opportunities and meet growing sustainability requirements.

Through the circular economy green deal, organisations can:

  • Commit to concrete measures to promote the circular economy
  • Improve resource efficiency and reduce environmental impact
  • Get support to implement the commitment and measure its effectiveness
  • Network with other circular economy actors
  • Find new partnerships and business models

The green deal for the circular economy also supports Finland’s goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2035.

Five areas for change – the cornerstones of circular economy development

The circular economy green deal is built around five areas of change that guide organisations to take effective and practical action:

Resource-wise built environment

The design and implementation of construction projects will be steered towards the circular economy. This means using recycled materials, extending the life cycle of buildings and maximising occupancy. The aim is to support sustainable urban development and reduce the environmental impact of construction.

Industry based on the circular economy

Industrial production processes will be modernised through sustainable product design, efficient use of raw materials and the exploitation of side streams. Electrification of processes and the use of recycled materials support environmentally friendly and cost-effective ways of working.

Sustainable consumption and business

The green deal for the circular economy promotes service models based on sharing, reuse, maintenance and repair. This will help to steer consumption patterns towards more sustainable consumption and increase the supply of circular economy products and services.

Material efficient energy system

The development of energy systems will emphasise resource efficiency, such as the use of waste heat and renewable energy sources. Digitalisation and non-combustion solutions will support carbon neutral energy systems.

A reforming food system

The reform of the food system is based on improving soil vitality, recycling nutrients and favouring domestic raw materials. Reducing food waste and more efficient packaging will reduce the environmental impact of the system.

How to get involved?

The organisation can select measures in the areas most relevant to them and sign a commitment, which can be supported by Circular Economy Finland and Green Building Council Finland. Committing to the green deal is an opportunity to have a concrete impact on the environment and society – and at the same time develop your own operations in a more sustainable direction.
