Energy Communities for Electricity Generation and Distribution
Energy communities can be seen as a form of sharing economy. It is where community members share the benefits of energy production and supply. Energy communities offer consumers a new way to participate in the energy market and improve their ability to produce part of the energy they use in the way they want.
Energy communities can be built around different forms of energy (electricity, heat, gas, fuels). This website only deals with energy communities related to electricity production and distribution.
Housing associations are emerging as key players in the energy community. They are ideally suited for community action, as they are already organisations formed by local residents. They are also used to managing common property and organising and co-financing projects.
Energy communities often operate not only to increase energy self-sufficiency, but also for economic gain. By jointly investing in larger electricity generation facilities and/or storage, the unit cost can be reduced. Energy communities also increase opportunities to make value choices in energy by providing a new opportunity to influence the way one produces electricity and thus the environmental impact.
