Carbon Dioxide Emissions from Energy Production and Use

Carbon dioxide emissions relating to energy production and consumption were 24.1 million tonnes in 2025, contributing about 66 per cent to the total CO2 emissions in Finland. Emissions in the sector went down by 2.6 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent from 2024, which corresponded to a fall of ten per cent due to reduced use of fossil fuels and peat as net imports of electricity and production of wind power increased.

According to Statistics Finland’s instant preliminary data, the total emissions of greenhouse gases in 2025 corresponded with 36.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2 eq.). Emissions have fallen by 49 per cent from the comparison year 1990. Compared with the previous year, emissions decreased by 7 per cent. Emissions not included in the EU Emissions Trading System fell by five per cent but those included in the EU ETS by eleven per cent.
