  • In 2024, final energy consumption in transport in Finland was approximately 45 TWh, i.e., about 16% of total final energy consumption.
  • Road transport accounted for 92% of domestic transport energy consumption. Passenger cars accounted for about 54% of road fuel consumption, heavy-duty transport 29%, and vans 11%.
  • Domestic transport energy consumption was 4% lower in 2024 than in 2000. Despite breaks in time series, data suggest that passenger transport by cars, measured in passenger-km, increased by 8%. Freight transport, measured in tonne-km, decreased by 12% over 2000–2024.

The next figure shows the final energy consumption of the transport sector in 2010 and 2024, and an analysis of factors which have affected the observed change in consumption (so-called decomposition analysis).  

  • Transport energy consumption decreased by 7 TWh over the period.
  • Reduced transport activity would have decreased consumption by 0.8 TWh without other changes.
  • Energy savings, mainly due to improved vehicle efficiency, amounted to 6.5 TWh.
  • Modal shifts increased consumption by 2.4 TWh.
  • Other factors, such as behavioural changes, reduced consumption by 1.7 TWh.
